During the next two years, their empire, fueled by the real estate bubble and cheap money, falters due to the economic crisis. Documenting the collaboration between world renowned chef Yotam Ottolenghi Jerusalem, Plenty and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, this feature film follows five visionary Pulitzer Prize winning critic, Jonathan Gold, is our VIrgilian guide, casting his light upon a vibrant and growing cultural movement, a movement in which he plays the dual roles of high-low priest and culinary geographer of his beloved Los Angeles.
As the documentary opens, we see Gold sitting at his computer and looking at a blank screen. Then all of the sudden the words start to roll and the voice-over gives us Gold's review of Guerilla Tacos, a food truck, To tell you more would spoil your viewing pleasure, you'll just have to see for yourself how it all plays out.
Couple of comments: the documentary is written, produced and directed by Laura Gabbert, who previously brought us the equally delightful "No Impact Man".
Here she profiles the well-known food critic and erstwhile music critic Jonathan Gold. I really didn't know much about this man before seeing this.
Turns out he is a down-to-earth guy, driving around his Dodge pick-up truck, little ego to speak of yet obviously very smart. One thing that he is very passionate about is his love for LA he grew up there , and the diversity of the food that is available there, due to the city being a melting pot of cultures or as Gold coins it, "a great glittering mosaic".
It seems that he'd rather visit and review food trucks and authentic holes-in-the-walls as opposed to the fancy 5 star French restaurant.
Just as Gold is using food only a pretext to write about the city, so also does Habbert only use Gold as a pretext to paint a portrait of LA.
And along the way, we get the answer to questions such as "why do we need food critics when we have Yelp reviews? Bottom line: this is an enjoyable and insightful documentary about a food critic and his interactions with the food scene in Los Angeles.
As it happened, I caught the movie on its very last day of that run. Not surprisingly, I had a private screening, as in: I literally was the only person in the theater.

Start your review of City of Gold. City of Gold by Will Hobbs, pages. Harper Collins, This was the beginning of what would become a long journey for Owen to try to retrieve the mules which had been taken from the barn.
His family had recently moved from Kansas to a farm in Colorado, and their whole family livelihood depended on the mules. His tenacious, nine-year-old brother, Till, does not want to be left behind!
It is an adventure, as well as a source of historical facts and fiction. The minimally few direct references have been well-managed.
I, personally, wanted to continue reading this book. The nonfiction information has left me wanting to learn more.
Apr 13, Ms. Yingling rated it liked it. E ARC provided by Edelweiss Plus Owen, Till and their mother have moved to Colorado for a fresh start after the death of the father in the early s.
They have the land for a farm near Durango and even have a pair of mules, Hercules and Peaches. When Owen hears something in the middle of the night, he goes to investigate and finds that the animals have been taken by a rustler.
Since the family will not be able to go forward with their plans without the mules, he takes off after them. He manages to locate them, but is unwilling and unable to force the thief, Harry Logan aka Kid Curry to give them back.
The sheriff thinks that the man will alter the brand on the animals and try to sell them to the mine in Telluride, so Owen takes off in pursuit.
He is well prepared with food and equipment, but fails to bring the papers for the animals with him. Undaunted, he managed to make it to the mine and even finds Hercules and helps him move a piece of mining equipment, but is unable to retrieve him.
He continues on his search, coming across friends of his uncle Frank, the man who gave the family the farm. Along the way, he comes across Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, crooked Marshall Jim Clark, and travels around a lot of interesting locations in Colorado.
Will he be able to finally locate the mules and get them back home so that the family farm can prosper? Strengths: This is an interesting time period little covered in middle grade literature.
The historical figures and details were well researched, and the notes at the end were fascinating. It's tough to remember that the west was still not densely settled in the early s, but Larson's Hattie Big Sky set in is about the only other book I've read on this topic.
Owen's assiduousness in hunting down the thieves is admirable, if dangerous, and the cast of characters he encounters are interesting. There's even an epilogue about what become of him and his brother Till.
Weaknesses: For all the historical detail and adventure, this didn't have the visceral pull of something like this author's Leaving Protection or Never Say Die What I really think: This author's modern adventures circulate very well in my library, but his historical books like Jason's Gold and Ghost Canoe don't.
Will purchase if funds allow. Feb 07, Ursa rated it it was amazing. After taking a break from writing, it's good to see Mr.
Hobbs back in top form. This book is a bit of a departure from his other works in that it is historical fiction rather than modern-day adventures set in the Western U.
The characters are likable and interesting, and without giving too much away, I'll just say that even the more familiar characters that eventually show up aren't all that bad.

Two brothers, Owen and Tillson Hollowell, have moved with their mother from eastern Kansas to a farm in Colorado.
Before they even get settled in, some no-good low-life absconds with their two hard-working mules. There's no way they can make a go of it without the mules to do the hard work, so Owen sets out to follow the rustler who took them.
Lots of history about mining operations of the day play into the story, as well as the different terrain Owen has to deal with.
He eventually finds where his mules have been taken and then it's a whole other set of problems to deal with getting them back.
I think I enjoyed this book so much because the setting is mainly in and around Durango, Silverton, Ouray, and Telluride--all places I have been on various trips with my family over the years.
Anyway, it's good to get something new from Will Hobbs. I wish him much success with this new middle grade novel.
This review based on a digital ARC provided by the publisher via Edelweiss. The book has a publication date of July 21, and is available for pre-order on Amazon.

He tracks them and finds them, but the man who stole them threatens to shoot him so her returns home. As he tells his mom what happened they come up with a plan and he sets off to find where the man takes them.
He arrives in a mining town and finds his mules, Hercules and Peaches, but can't seem to get them back. Then his younger brothe The Hollowell family has moved to Colorado to start over after their dad died.
Then his younger brother Till shows up and they convince the sheriff to go after the mule rustler.
This is not my favorite historical book, but it did give a lot of history and information about the west and the mining era. The author also included a note at the end with lots of history and his research from writing the book.
Would be good for older elementary and up. I really liked Till and the outlaws. The book says grades 5 and up so I'm a little old for the age range but I still thought the book over-explained things at times, which was just a little repetitive.
I was still able to enjoy it despite that though. I received this book as an arc. Sarah rated it liked it Apr 11, Julie Williams rated it liked it Jul 07,
